Helen Hills Hills Chapel at Smith College makes effort to welcome all faiths

NORTHAMPTON ? Shalom. Salaam. Peace.

No matter how you spell it, you can find inner peace at Helen Hills Hills Chapel and commune with the godhead, if you wish. The chapel at Smith College has five distinct spaces where students from specific religions can worship and several other spaces where they can simply sit in peace.

Most recently, the multi-faith space caught the eye of Rajan Zed, an Indo-American who promotes Hinduism around the world as the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism. Zed was particularly impressed with the Hindu mandir, a sort of temple where Smith students from India and Pakistan can light incense and view images of various Hindu deities.

?It?s a step in the right direction,? Zed said in a statement he released to the press.

Jennifer Walters, Smith?s Dean of Religious Life, said the mandir has actually been part of Helen Hills Hills Chapel since 2000. The space is at the top of the stairs near the balcony to the chapel. There are also rooms where Muslim and Jewish students can worship, as well as the Blue Room, a quiet space where Smith students can pray, meditate or just sit quietly.

?Many of our students are agnostic,? Walters said. ?Most students who come to Smith College don?t have any religious affiliation.?

Built in 1955, the chapel looks from the outside like a classic Protestant New England church. Smith alumna Helen Hills Hills donated money for the project with the understanding that it would be an interfaith space. Walters said the school is currently looking at making the main sanctuary, which has pews and resembles a Christian meeting house, more accessible to students of all faiths.

Penn State officials face court hearing in Sandusky scandal

By Dave Warner

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (Reuters) - A judge on Monday will start hearing evidence against three former Penn State officials accused of covering up an early report that coach Jerry Sandusky sexually abused a child, allowing him to molest boys for years.

Sandusky, 69, a former assistant football coach, was convicted in June 2012 of 45 counts of sexual abuse involving 10 boys. He is serving a sentence of 30 to 60 years in a state prison.

The three university officials are Graham Spanier, 65, who was fired as president amid the scandal that rocked the high-stakes world of college football; Athletic Director Tim Curley, 59, who was placed on administrative leave, and retired Senior Vice President Gary Schultz, 63.

At the hearing in Dauphin County Court, both sides will argue their case stemming from a November 2012 grand jury report. Harrisburg District Judge William Wenner will decide if there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial.

The grand jury accused Spanier, Curley and Schultz of failing to alert authorities after Mike McQueary, an assistant football coach, told school officials in 2001 that he saw Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a locker room shower.

Prosecutors said the "conspiracy of silence" permitted Sandusky to continue preying on boys, most of whom he met through a charity he founded for at-risk youth.

Sandusky was arrested in November 2011 and charged with molesting boys. A year later, in November 2012, a grand jury charged Spanier, Curley and Schultz with endangering the welfare of children, criminal conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Spanier also was charged with perjury.

Curley and Schultz were previously charged in November 2011 with perjury and failure to report suspected abuse.

Within weeks of Sandusky's arrest, Penn State Trustees fired Spanier, at the time the nation's highest-paid public university president. Trustees also fired revered head football coach Joe Paterno, Sandusky's boss. Months later, Paterno, 85, died of lung cancer.

Civil lawsuits filed by the victims, now grown men, against the university are close to being settled, with the school putting aside $60 million to cover the claims, according to a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs. The attorney said there were as many as 32 claims from alleged victims.

Spanier's lawyers also have served legal notice that they intend to file defamation charges against Louis Freeh, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Freeh was the author of a study, commissioned by the university, spelling out a narrative of the scandal that many in the state rejected, including the Paterno family.

The Freeh report prompted the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the governing body for college sports, to issue sanctions against Penn State. The NCAA imposed a $60 million fine and voided the 14 seasons of football victories Sandusky coached.

Soap Springs Eternal

Debbi Morgan and Thorsten Kaye in a recent episode of All My Children. Debbi Morgan and Thorsten Kaye in a recent episode of All My Children

Photo by David M. Russell/The OnLine Network

Thorsten Kaye is a soap-opera actor who looks like a soap-opera actor: bedroom eyes, dimpled chin, brown hair long enough to tuck behind his ears, the shoulders of a linebacker. He was sitting with me in the bustling Stamford, Conn., offices from which the longtime ABC soaps All My Children and One Life to Live are attempting to resurrect themselves as Web series and setting me straight about the daytime soap-opera business model. Soap operas are in the midst of a mass extinction event, one that has seen the five series canceled in as many years, leaving just four on the air. In 2011, ABC announced the end of AMC and OLTL, which had both been broadcast for more than 40 years but were regularly attracting between 2 million and 3 million viewers?about 5 million less than they had two decades earlier. So when I asked Kaye why he thought the shows, both of which he has appeared on, were cut loose, I was expecting to hear something about audience fragmentation, more and better alternate options for viewers, and fewer women staying at home during the day.

Instead, I got a defense, in the form of a brutal comparison with the networks? prime-time business model. ?I was on a show last season that cost between $6 [million] and $9 million an episode, and they had about a million people watching,? Kaye said in his British accent. ?A show like this cost the network about $45,000 an episode, and they had over 2 million people watching. This wasn?t broken when these guys got it.?

The show that Kaye is referring to is Smash, NBC?s high-profile musical theater catastrophe, in which he played Anjelica Huston?s younger bartender love interest, who briefly wound up in jail for financing Marilyn: The Musical with tainted funds. On AMC he plays Zach Slater, a brooding casino owner, who briefly wound up dead, only to be resurrected by something called the ?Orpheus Project? and is now trying to extract the daughter of a close friend from a sex-trafficking ring. ?These guys? are Jeff Kwatinetz and Rich Frank, a former talent agent and a president at Disney, respectively, whose Prospect Park productions scooped up AMC and OLTL because they saw a potential profit where ABC saw series more expensive than the talk shows they could air in their stead. (The Chew, which replaced AMC on ABC affiliates now has, like AMC did, about 2.5 million viewers.) The new model was simple: They told the New York Times that if they could get 500,000 of the two shows? devoted fans to watch and pay for their stories on Hulu and iTunes, they would break even. The company hired veteran producers and cast members?though AMC?s most famous alumna, Susan Lucci, opted out?and beginning late this past April started releasing 30-minute episodes of both AMC and OLTL on the Internet.

Simply put, Kwatinetz and Frank are attempting to remake a once mass product as a niche one. It?s a little bit like watching an Australopithecus hitch a ride on a rocket ship, hoping to find the one colony in the galaxy where he can still thrive. Daytime soap operas may be a punch line, but they are the ancestors of modern television, and not just the schlocky stuff. From the ?60s through the early ?90s, soap operas were doing things that other shows would and could not: regularly exploring controversial issues from abortion?AMC aired TV?s first legal abortion in 1973?to homosexuality, showcasing women?s narratives, not saving any plot for later, and demanding their audience have an encyclopedic grasp of past events that would shame the most devoted Lost-head. In the fluidity of their villains and heroes, who were constantly switching places so that inevitably even the nicest characters did something unethical, soaps rudimentarily presaged the anti-hero, the figure at the heart of the modern TV renaissance. Still, you don?t expect to find the soap opera on a cutting-edge distribution platform.

In the decades following soaps? heyday, other shows have taken the relevant DNA and evolved. In 1980, when 30 million people watched Luke and Laura get married on General Hospital, soap operas didn?t look that different from everything else on TV: sitcoms with laugh tracks, dramas with mediocre lighting, prime-time soaps with huge shoulder pads. That is no longer the case. Viewers now have thousands of choices about what to watch, and show ranging from Keeping Up With the Kardashians to Mad Men and Scandal can provide a more polished fix for viewers? serialized story jones.

And yet in Stamford this past April, hundreds of people?writers, actors, producers, and crew members?were working at a frenzied pace to give new life to a genre generally thought to be antiquated, cheesy, shrinking, aging, and expensive. Why? Why save the soap opera? Why put the Australopithecus on the rocket ship?

The hangar housing the soundstage for AMC and OLTL is vast but packed with about 25 different sets, a bedroom sharing a wall with a coffee shop that shares floor space with a police station that leads into a high school corridor and on and on, a hall not of mirrors but anodyne furniture. Even the stairs leading down from the production offices serve double duty as part of OLTL?s nightclub, Shelter. In one corner of the soundstage, a score of actors were filming scenes from a black-tie gala?black tie is the only kind of party soaps throw?champagne flutes in hand. A red-headed, middle-aged actress wearing a long-sleeved sequined dress admired a diamond necklace up for silent auction. A man, an old friend in a tuxedo, stood behind her and chivalrously helped her try it on. She picked up a mirror to look at herself?and then someone yelled ?Cut!? The mirror was at the wrong angle. A disembodied voice over a loudspeaker made a correction, and within minutes, the actors went again, quickly nailing the shot and moving on to the next.

Soap operas famously shoot at breakneck speed. Network showrunners often complain about having to do 22 episodes a year, but soaps run on a schedule similar to the post office?s: Come rain or shine or snow or sleet, only Christmas, Thanksgiving, and breaking news events will keep them from their appointed time slots. Despite no longer having time slots, AMC and OLTL remain labor-intensive. On ABC, both shows aired for an hour, but only 36 minutes of that was content. (The rest was commercials.) In their new form, episodes are 30 minutes long, and all of it is content. The series also have staggered shooting schedules: AMC gets the studio for five weeks, followed by OLTL, so episodes need to be banked to run even when the show isn?t shooting.

Low-cost plastic-clad iPhone mentioned in China Labor Watch report

Remember that China Labor Watch report we recently covered? After digging further into the document, 9to5Mac's unearthed more possible evidence about that often leaked, low-cost plastic-clad iPhone. The introduction states:

Its assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones.

Then, on page 27:

Today's work is to paste protective film on the iPhone's plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple. [...] The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important.

Of course, there's no definitive proof that Apple will be launching a more affordable iPhone made of polycarbonate -- after all the company might just be testing prototypes that are not destined to market. Still, the information in this report sure gives all these recent iPhone rumors a lot more merit.

Francisco Garzon, Spain train driver, faces 79 counts of homicide

Francisco Garzon: The driver of the Spanish train that crashed last week faces 79 counts of homicide. Spain's royal family and leading politicians were to attend a Mass on Monday in honor of the 79 people killed in the country's worst train accident in decades.

Santiago de Compostela, Spain

Spain's royal family and leading politicians were to attend a Mass on Monday in homage to the 79 people killed in the country's worst train accident in decades, as the driver left police custody for the first time after being charged in the case.

Francisco Jose Garzon Amo faces 79 counts of negligent homicide after being questioned late Sunday in a two-hour hearing with the judge. The investigation has increasingly focused on why he failed to brake in time to stop the train from hurtling into a dangerous curve, where it careered off the tracks and slammed into a concrete wall.

Judge Luis Alaez ruled that Garzon was not a flight risk and released him without bail, but ordered him to appear before the court once a week and not to leave Spain. He was driven from the court in a police car after dark, but it was not clear where he was taken.

Several Spanish neswspapers, including leading daily El Pais, reported that the driver acknowledged to the judge that the train was travelling too fast, but that he briefly stopped paying attention.

That could not be independently confirmed, but a witness who scrambled to the scene after the accident told Spanish television that Garzon told him he was going fast and couldn't brake.

The crash left a pall over the city of Santiago de Compostela, an important Catholic religious site that had been preparing for a feast celebrating Spain's patron saint. Shrines and regional flags with black mourning ribbons have dotted the area since Wednesday's crash.

Crown heir Prince Felipe, his sister Princess Elena and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy were among those scheduled to attend the evening ceremony in the ancient cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Many families of victims were also expected to attend the Mass, which is to be televised nationally. The ceremony is open to the public and a giant screen is to be set up in one of the squares outside the cathedral, where thousands of pilgrims, many with backpacks and walking sticks, traditionally gather on arriving in the city.

Officials canceled the feast of St. James of Compostela on Thursday, and turned the sports arena into a morgue.

Most of the dead were Spaniards but there were also victims from Algeria, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, France, Italy, Mexico and the United States. The train was almost certainly carrying would-be pilgrims although most usually walk to Santiago from all over Spain and abroad.

On Sunday, families of victims performed the painful task of retrieving their loved ones' belongings, collecting luggage that was being held by police.

The Spanish rail agency has said the brakes should have been applied four kilometers (2.5 miles) before the train hit the curve. The witness who rushed to the scene said in an interview broadcast Sunday that minutes after the crash Garzon told him he couldn't brake.

The resident, Evaristo Iglesias, said he and another person accompanied the blood-soaked Garzon to flat ground where other injured people were being laid out, waiting for emergency services to arrive.

"He told us that he wanted to die," Iglesias told Antena 3 television. "He said he had needed to brake but couldn't," Iglesias said. He added that Garzon said "he had been going fast."

Spain's state-run train company has described him as an experienced driver who knew the route well.

Officials said 70 people injured in the train accident remained hospitalized, 22 of them in critical condition.

Low Blow: Ed Schultz Claims Speaker Boehner Cheats At Everything, Including Golf

Ever since MSNBC moved Ed Schultz to the coveted Saturday afternoon time slot, he has found a new opportunity to trash conservatives. Speaking on Saturday July 27, Schultz took his erratic ranting to a new low when he questioned whether or not Boehner of all things, cheats at golf.

During a segment entitled ?Ask Ed Live? Schultz took a question from one of the few listeners that watches MSNBC on Saturday afternoon now that Lockup has stopped airing. The viewer wanted to know, ?If you could sit down with Speaker Boehner, what would you ask him?? to which Schultz mockingly answered: [Read more below, followed by video.]

?I?d actually like to play golf with the guy because then I?d get 4 hours if we played 18. Because when you play golf with somebody, you find out if they cheat or not. I'm curious if he really is an honest golfer.?

Schultz? s rant didn?t end there, as he proceeded to double-down on his attack on Speaker Boehner by claiming, "With the American people, he has not been an honest broker. He has been against the will of the people time and time again."

It?s ironic that Schultz claims that ?with the American people, he [Boehner] has not been an honest broker, when during the same Saturday broadcast, ?Big Eddie? ridiculously claimed that ?Social Security is cheap? and doesn?t contribute to the deficit.

Unfortunately, Schultz has a problem with the truth, as he has used his show to falsely claim that:

Given Schultz?s history of hatred, suggesting that Speaker Boehner cheats at golf is quite tame for man who was demoted to Saturday afternoon and claims he chose the new time slot.

Oil recovers to over $105 after earlier sharp fall

The price of oil recovered to trade above $105 a barrel Monday, having earlier fallen on the back of a sharp drop in Japan's Nikkei stock index.

By early afternoon in Europe, West Texas Intermediate, the benchmark for U.S. crude, was up 57 cents to $105.27 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 79 cents to close at $104.70 on Friday in New York.

Earlier in the session, the WTI traded as low as $103.87 as the benchmark index of Japan's stock market, the Nikkei 225, fell 2.5 percent due to the strengthening yen and worries about China's economy. However, a solid performance by European markets and an anticipated steady opening on Wall Street helped support oil prices.

Traders in all financial markets have a lot to digest this week. The main focus will be on whether the U.S. Federal Reserve will provide more clarity as to when it will start scaling back its monetary stimulus. The Fed has been buying $85 billion of financial assets a month in an attempt to keep long-term borrowing rates low and help shore up the U.S. economic recovery. A lot of that money has found its way flowing round financial markets and that's helped oil prices.

However, the program is widely expected to be scaled down later this year as the economy improves.

Oil prices have also swung to the tune of developments in China. Last week, they fell as China, a major energy consumer, decided to press ahead with painful economic restructuring and forgo another round of stimulus even though growth has slowed.

The price of oil broke above $100 on July 3 for the first time since May 2012, mostly due to falling U.S. crude stockpiles and increased interest from financial investors.

Brent crude, which is traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, was up 64 cents to $107.81 a barrel.

Analysts noted the newly widening gap between Nymex and Brent. Over the past weeks, WTI had slashed off most of its $20 discount to Brent and even briefly traded higher that the London contract, partly on the back of four straight weeks of declining U.S. crude stockpiles. Now the gap again is above $2 in favor of Brent.

"It therefore appears as if the WTI bull-run is over for the moment," analysts at JBC Energy in Vienna said in a report. "Despite hefty stock draws, U.S. crude stocks remain well above the 5-year average."

Analysts at Commerzbank added said the Nymex contract had developed a "considerable potential for correction, which points to further price falls in the coming days."

In other trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange:

? Wholesale gasoline rose 0.65 cent to $3.0098 a gallon.

? Heating oil added 2.15 cents to $3.0346 a gallon.

? Natural gas shed 8.6 cents to $3.469 per 1,000 cubic feet.

House GOP Readies 'All of the Above' Energy Bill

Republican House members will likely offer energy legislation when they reconvene following their summer recess that includes pursuit of alternative means of energy, such as wind and solar energy that have historically been opposed by many conservatives.

House Republicans plan on including such measures in pushing an "all of the above" approach to energy and will make an all-out effort to bring Democrats on board their energy package before unveiling it in September.

The early mover behind this effort is sophomore Republican Rep. Bill Johnson of Ohio, a member of the House Energy Committee.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax, Johnson unveiled a video he narrates which recalls President John F. Kennedy in 1961 calling for landing a man on the Moon by the end of the decade and how "we actually beat his deadline by two years."

"President Kennedy captured all of our imaginations with his vision of America putting a man on the moon in ten years and he made it happen because he reached out to every fabric of our society, including all political persuasions," Johnson told Newsmax. "That's the same approach a true 'all-of-the-above' energy vision must take -- to reach out to all sides and produce a program that makes sure we're not dependent on other countries."

Neither Johnson nor any member the Energy and Commerce Committee has yet to cobble together a final package, but Johnson made clear that any energy measure from the Republican side would include investment in wind and solar energy, both of which are popular among the Democratic side of the aisle.

Johnson also emphasized that the Republican energy package would include traditional sources of energy as coal.

Disputing administration criticism of the coal industry, the Buckeye State lawmaker said: "Coal is cleaner than ever and less expensive. It has been and must be an integral part of our energy agenda."

Johnson spoke to Newsmax a day after White House Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted that the president is also committed to an "all-the-above" energy policy.

Carney told reporters, "The president?s commitment is clear. He is for an all-of-the-above approach, and that includes increased production of traditional forms of fossil fuels."

"We now have record production of natural gas. We now have a balance of imports versus domestic production that is better than we've seen in 20 years or more," Carney said. "And that reflects his approach, as does the investment in, and a substantial increase in the production of renewable energy."

Johnson voiced sharp disagreement with Carney's comments.

"What the president's spokesman said is very different from what his administration has done," said Johnson.

Johnson noted that the administration's hostile attitude toward the coal industry and to hydraulic fracturing are not examples of "all of the above" but "of picking winners and losers.

"Let the green energy folks have their stakes in this, with wind and solar energy. But also don't pick winners and losers. Try every approach possible and, above all, get out of the way of private industry innovation," Johnson said. "Already, our space-age technology holds promise that we can possibly fracture without liquid. We've got to change the dialogue."

In discussing the possible components in the bill that House Republicans will offer in the fall, Johnson repeatedly returned to how critical it is to bring Democratic colleagues to join to co-sponsor and pass the energy measure.

Even if this necessitates Democratic lawmakers as chief sponsors, Johnson is supportive. He recalled the axiom that Ronald Reagan kept on his desk as president: "There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn't mind who gets the credit" -- which Johnson also keeps on the desk of his congressional office.

"I can't walk in his shoes," he said of Reagan. "But if I bring people of differing viewpoints and from different parties together on this issue, I'd say I've learned something from him."

THE NATION July 27, 2013 4:11 pm

The trip aims to tighten diplomatic and economic strategies with the East African countries ahead of a high-level meeting of Thai and African executives in Thailand in February.

Mozambique is rich in natural resources but still lags behind in development. The country is eyeing Thailand as a development model and hoping to tap Thai expertise in agriculture, tourism and education.

Yingluck is seeking closer cooperation with the country in the energy sector. Thailand's PTT has become a major shareholder of Africa's Hope Energy and is interested in buying more gas from Mozambique, which in turn imports 200,000 tonnes of Thai rice per year.

Tanzania's capital Dar es Salaam has a large Indian Ocean port which is expected to form a trade route with Myanmar's Dawei port, currently under construction, to transport goods to Thailand.

Uganda, meanwhile, is being eyed by Thai businesses as a promising destination for investment in processed agricultural products. Uganda's Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi recently visited Thailand.

Chromecast, that is. I really can't decide whether Chromecast is the bigger story out of last week's "Breakfast with Sundar" in San Francisco, or if it's the new Nexus 7. We'll have our full reviews of both this week — Jerry and Alex are leading those — and I'll have some thoughts on them as well, in addition to a little gushing here.

On the new Nexus 7: In a word, yes. The resolution. The improved hardware. A slightly higher price, sure, but still well within limits for what I'd consider a must-purchase.

On Chromecast: I couldn't help but blather this on Google+, but this is why I was crowing about the Nexus Q for the last year and change. Yeah, Chromecast's not nearly as sexy a piece of hardware, but the end result is the same, and then some — especially when you take the Chromecast SDK into account.

It's OK that not everybody gets it. Chromecast doesn't have to be all things for all people. No piece of tech does, for that matter. And the ridiculousness of "But the pictures didn't all show it needs USB power" will die off.

A $35 appliance that lets me stream my music and videos — plus YouTube and a full Chrome tab — into my entertainment center and bedroom TV? No-brainer. I bought two myself. And we're giving away one a day for the rest of this week. And we'll have plenty more on Chromecast as it matures.

Let's have a few other thoughts on the past week. It's been a busy one.

Jennifer Aniston Finally Reveals Her Wedding Plans

Jennifer Aniston Justin TherouxWell, folks, it looks like Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux aren't getting married anytime soon, based on comments she made to set the record straight on the state of their relationship.

Yes, they're still engaged, but as far as finally tying the knot goes, it sounds like timing is a major issue for them.

Jen told The Associated Press, "We just want to do it when it's perfect, and we're not rushed, and no one is rushing from a job or rushing to a job."

Huh. I guess that makes sense.

But there's also another reason Jen and Justin aren't in a hurry to get hitched.

She said, "We already feel married."

Ugh. Typical Hollywood statement. But feeling married and being married are two totally different things, so if they're really as happy and in love as they claim to be, why not get this show on the road and seal the deal already?

I mean, given how busy they are, the timing is never going to be exactly perfect, so they might as well at least get some sort of plans in the works.

Long engagements tend to lead to all sorts of rumors about trouble in the relationship, which Jen and Justin have had their fair share of -- but she insists that everything is still hunky-dory.

Jen added, "We have yet to set any dates. There have been no canceled weddings. There have been no postponed weddings. There have been no arguments about where to get married. Just clearing all that up."

Ok, so basically Jennifer Aniston is engaged and the wedding is on but it may or may not ever actually happen. (What else is new?)

Do you think Jennifer will ever marry Justin?

San Jose State Baseball Recruits for 2014

As a followup to the interview with Coach Nakama I thought it would be a good idea to see what newbies he's bringing in to help him effect change. Reviews for the other programs in the MWC and their recruits will follow.

Here?s some info I found on baseball recruits for next year's Spartans. Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Don?t hear that anymore. I've already posted an interview with the coach to see if he has any other commits on board that we don?t know . The list is fairly long which is no surprise as Nakama feels there must be more competition for playing time for a team that did not fare too well last year. Read on:

Andrew Hermanson, 2B, Great Oak HS, Temecula, CA

He batted third in the order for an ordinary team and hit .346. No homeruns but he could hit. Unless he?s hiding something I don?t see him elbowing out Valdez next year.

Carter Johnson, P, La Costa Canyon HS, Carlsbad, CA

Carter looks like he may help the staff. No where to go but up, right? he was 6-4 and 2.49 in 73 IP. 85 strikeouts in those innings is the good part. He had 32 walks also and that should improve. He had 8 games where he went 6 or more innings. That shows trust from the coach.

Andrew Herrera, RHP, San Mateo CC, San Mateo, CA

He?s 6?4? and 225 so he fits the classic mold for a pitcher and went to Wilcox HS which is a public school powerhouse in the San Jose area. He was 6-0 and 2.57 in 56 IP. He had 36/13 K/BB ratio. Not a power pitcher but gets guys out. Another welcome addition.

Jake Swiech, RHP, Paraclete HS, Lancaster, CA

His secondary position is catcher but I doubt he?ll get a look there. He?s 6?3? and 195 which says he?ll get bigger. When?s the last time the Spartans had a tall rangy catcher? Never? That?s about right. His final stats had him at 7-3 and 1.16. He plays American Legion ball in the summer and that is always a plus. They have him listed as a catcher. Hmm.

Alec de Watteville, INF, Oak Ridge HS, El Dorado Hills, CA

Alec hit .379 and 1 his senior year on a pretty good team (19-9). He comes from the Sacramento area and we all know that is a baseball hotbed. Sacramento State is getting fat by just recruiting within an hour?s drive.

Michael Breen, SS, San Benito HS, Hollister, CA

A local kid. He hit .269 with 1. I don?t know what to say about that other than he has a lot of convincing to do. He?ll be trying to win a starter?s position as SS is wide open.

Brett Bautista, OF, Granite Bay HS, Granite Bay, CA

Brett hit .301 with no homeruns. He doesn?t strike out but he doesn?t walk much either. He played in a tough conference so that always counts for something.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, SS, Mid-Pacific Institute HS, Honolulu, HI

I?ll go out on a limb here. I think this is the kid who will be the shortstop next year. His team was the state champion and he made the All-Tournament team as an infielder. The one article I read said ?he made some dazzling plays at shortstop?. I can live with shortstops and catchers that have trouble at the plate if they deliver in the field. I could find little else (drafted and signed by Texas Rangers).

Michael Wright, RHP, Elk Grove HS, Elk Grove, CA

Michael hit .333 with 4 homeruns this past season. That?s a lot of homeruns for a SJS recruit. He really shown as a pitcher as he ended up 7-0 and 1.68 over 62 IP. He struck out 55 and walked 24 which ain?t bad. His WHIP was a bit over 1.00 at 1.09 which is also quite good. Doesn?t appear to be a power pitcher but gets guys out. Another pretty good high school pitcher. Good enough for third team All-State for CalHiSports.

Tyler Olivet, OF, Cabrillo CC, Aptos, CA

Ty hit .386 with no homeruns this past season. I?m wondering if Mike Gerlach (a graduated player who played at Cabrillo before transferring) gave him the heads up about SJS and its baseball program. He played at Los Gatos so he?s very local. His OBP was a very good .500 so he gets on base; a lot.

Jace Puckett, LHP, Feather River CC, Quincy, CA

As a sophomore at the juco level he was 10-3 and 1.35. Here?s a bit more to whet your appetite. His strikeout to walks ratio was better than 2:1 and his WHIP was under 1.00 as he gave up 55 hits and walked 31 in 93 IP. That is very good indeed. He led his team in just about every category.

Logan Handzlik, RHP, Hoover HS, Fresno, CA

Logan was 2-2 and 1.36 in 36 IP. He struck out 41 and walked 13. His WHIP was just a tad under 1.00 so he certainly has all his numbers in the right place. Notice his home town. He was nominated for All-State honors his junior year while at Oakdale HS.

Logan Lanza, RHP, Rodriguez HS, Fairfield, CA

This Logan was 4-4 and 2.61 his senior season. He started 11 games and the team was just 14-14 so they depended upon him a lot. He pitched 45 innings while striking out 48 and walking 26 (a bit high). Those numbers aren?t ?Holy crap!? good but good none-the-less. He will get the opportunity to pitch in his first year at the D1 level.

Austin Ragsdale, RHP, Bradshaw Christian HS, Sacramento, CA

The list seems to go on and on. Here?s another late signee that happens to be a pitcher. This kid seems to be very good also. Austin hit .446 with 5 homeruns and that?s not his strength. As a pitcher he was 9-1 and 0.60 (not a typo) in 58 IP. He struck out 76 (again, not a typo) and walked 14. I don?t know what he throws but, they can?t hit whatever it is. He gave up 36 hits over those innings which works out to a WHIP of 0.86. Where is he finding these guys??? There?s more; he made MaxPreps? 2013 California All-State Baseball Team.

Jonathan Hernandez, LHP, LA Harbor CC, Wilmington, CA

Another arm from the southland. He was 3-2 and 3.21 for a less than a .500 team. I know, I know, his 3.21 ERA doesn?t sound like much but it was the best on the team (6.39) by more than a run. That stands out. His strikeouts (22) were third on the team but he did it in 33 IP and that also stands out. His WHIP is just over 1.00 so he?s good there also. Overall, a good pick-up.

Jack Veasey, C, Acalanes HS, Lafayette, CA

I couldn?t find a lot about Jack other than an article by Jimmy Durkin (who with the San Jose Mercury seems to have his hand on the pulse of just about everything sports-wise). Before the season started he picked Acalanes as the eventual champion (they were) and had Veasey as one of the players to watch in the division.

Grammy-winning songwriter JJ Cale has died

Music

Grammy-winning musician and songwriter JJ Cale, perhaps best known for writing Eric Clapton's hits "Cocaine" and "After Midnight," died Friday at age 74 after suffering a heart attack.

"We've lost a great artist and a great person tonight," a statement on his Facebook page read. The page said there are no immediate plans for a memorial service, but urged fans to consider a donation to their local animal shelter.

Cale was well-respected by musicians. Clapton told Vanity Fair magazine that Cale was the living person he most admired, and singer Neil Young said, "Of all the players I ever heard, it's gotta be Hendrix and JJ Cale who are the best electric guitar players."

Born in Oklahoma in 1938, Cale became one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a mix of rockabilly, country, rock 'n' roll, jazz and blues.

He left Oklahoma for Los Angeles as a young man, and was on the verge of giving up his struggle to make it in the music business in 1970 when Clapton recorded his song "After Midnight," and later "Cocaine."

Cale then released his own first album, "Naturally," in 1972, including his own version of "After Midnight." The album would bring him his only Top 100 hit, "Crazy Mama," which reached No. 22 on the Billboard charts. He continued to release solo albums until 2009, and can be heard on Clapton's new album, "Old Sock," released in March.

"I remember when I made my first album, I was 32 or 33 years old and I thought I was way too old then," Cale said in an interview on his website. "When I see myself doing this at 70, I go, ?What am I doing? I should be layin' down in a hammock.'"

In 2008, "After Midnight" was nominated to be the official rock song of the state of Oklahoma, but lost out to The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize?"

Cale's songs were also released by such famous names as Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and The Allman Brothers.

In 2008, he and Clapton won the Grammy for best contemporary blues album for the 2006 release, "The Road to Escondido." That album was certified gold for selling more than 500,000 units. Cale said on his website that he was perhaps prouder of his engineering and production work on the award-winning album than his performance.

"I think it goes back to me being a recording mixer and engineer. Because of all the technology now you can make music yourself and a lot of people are doing that now," he said. "I started out doing that a long time ago and I found when I did that I came up with a unique sound."

It never bothered him, he said on his site, that many people didn't know his name. "What's really nice is when you get a check in the mail," he said. "(Fame) elevates your ego to the point where you start believing your own (expletive)."

Should Anthony Weiner Step Down as a Candidate for Mayor of New York City?

?I will not leave him because I love him and we have a child,? Anthony Weiner?s wife, Huma Abedin, said in a press conference. If she were being honest she would say she was not leaving Weiner because she wants to be the wife of the mayor of New York City.

Abedin, a political animal and trophy wife, is following Hillary Clinton?s playbook about how to get your cheating husband into a powerful office, just like Hillary stood by Bill during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Also Abedin works for Hillary. This is well oiled politics at its finest.

Bottom line, who cares what Abedin believes? At issue is what kind of mayor could a practicing sex addict make? What kind of honesty would the city of New York be faced with if a dishonest, tricky, narcissistic addict were to be its mayor.

He was devious enough to have the name Carlos Danger as an alias during his sexting and phone-sex bouts. Now the press has found Sydney Leathers, the young woman who was the recipient of Weiner?s lust. She wants money for her story, CNN reports with negative innuendo -- while it, too, wants to make money off of her story. Smear the girl before she can say, ?My name is?? if she will not play cricket with CNN.

But after reviewing Weiner?s politics, I wonder if the Democrats are not losing a good candidate. Weiner was the only member of Congress who had the guts to call the Republicans on what they were doing. When Republicans are caught in sex scandals, they stay. Look at Rep. Mark Sanford, who lied by saying he was hiking the Appalachian Trail when he was in the throes of an affair in Argentina. Or David Zitter, who paid a prostitute yet remained in the Senate.

When all the scandal clears the political air, is Weiner a good candidate? Supporters say he would be the best candidate were it not for his addiction. What to do with your vote?

This scandal will pass, and perhaps it is good that Weiner, despite the New York Times urging him to step down, does not creep to the exit but stand tall and say, ?Yes, I am a recovering sex addict, and I?m running for mayor of New York City because I am the best candidate.?

After all, aren?t most politicians corrupt in one way or another? If any city could have a mayor who is a sex addict, it is New York City. (The only other city, of course, is L.A.)
