Looking for a group of literate, dedicated roleplayers!

I have a few ideas in mind for some roleplays I'd love to make, but I wanted to try and scrounge a group up before I posted anything. One of the biggest problems I've found since starting here is that most roleplays just fall apart. I aim to find a group of dedicated and literate individuals that can commit themselves to a roleplay.

For the simple fact that I am attempting to find a group before presenting an idea, I had a few to toss out there to garner some interest.

1. Walking Dead based Zombie Survival RP

This isn't supposed to follow Rick and CO. or mirror any of the environments, but The Walking Dead is unique in the way it follows the idea of an apocalypse. Instead of focusing on battle and the zombies themselves (or finding a cure or whatnot), this RP would aim to follow the lives of average citizens surviving in this new world. Due to the nature of this RP, constraints would have to be considered -- for instance, no military based characters, limited availability to firepower, scrounging for supplies, etc..

2. Dragon Age based RP

The Dragon Age universe is something particularly interesting, with unique views of magic and religion. I don't expect everyone to have played both games or either of the games (however, I would ask that you familiarize yourself with the DA universe via the wiki). Again, it wouldn't follow Grey Warden and Crew, but be based on the universe -- so the taint, the darkspawn, magic, the Fade, etc..

3. Mass Effect based RP

Similar to the ideas of the Dragon Age RP, following the universe, but not the characters.

4. Fall Out based RP

It would follow the base story line of Fall Out, including when the bombs went off, why, how individuals survived and all included races -- Ghouls, Supermutants, Humans -- and enemies -- mutated insects, Feral Ghouls, Supermutants, and various robots. It would utilize the SPECIAL statistics and PERKS to allow more in depth roleplaying for scavenging, combat, and interactions between characters and NPCs.

I'm also open to any other ideas.

Feel free to reply here or shoot me a message.

No-man's land attests to Japan's nuclear nightmare (AP)

IWAKI, Japan ? Fukushima was just emerging from the snows of winter when the disaster hit ? a 9.0-magnitude earthquake, the strongest in Japan's recorded history, followed by a tsunami.

The wall of water destroyed much of the northeastern coast on March 11. In the northeast region of Fukushima, a different disaster was brewing: Three reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant were melting down, irreparably damaged by the super tremor.

Now, as the snows are beginning to fall again, the government has announced the plant has attained a level of stability it is calling a "cold shutdown." As many as 3,000 workers ? plumbers, engineers, technicians ? stream into the facility each day.

The tsunami's destruction is still visible. Mangled trucks, flipped over by the wave, sit alongside the roads inside the complex, piles of rubble stand where the walls of the reactor structures crumbled and large pools of water still cover parts of the campus.

In the ghost towns around Fukushima Dai-ichi, vines have overtaken streets, feral cows and owner-less dogs roam the fields. Dead chickens rot in their coops.

The tens of thousands of people who once lived around the plant have fled. They are now huddling in gymnasiums, elementary school classrooms, bunking with friends, sometimes just sleeping in their cars, moving from place to place as they search for alternatives.

For those who lived on the perimeter of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, fliers used to come in the mail every so often explaining that someday this might happen. Most recipients saw them as junk mail, and threw them away without a second glance. For those who did read them, the fliers were always worded to be reassuring ? suggesting that although a catastrophic nuclear accident was extremely unlikely, it could require evacuating the area.

Never was it even hinted that the evacuation could last years, or decades.

At most of the shelters, food is doled out military-style, at set times. Personal space is extremely limited, often just big enough to fit a futon and the collective snoring at night makes sleep fitful, at best. Baths are public, cramped, dark.

The total amount of radiation released from the plant is still unknown, and the impact of chronic low-dose radiation exposures in and around Fukushima is a matter of scientific debate.

Recent studies also suggest Japan continues to significantly underestimate the scale of the disaster ? which could have health and safety implications far into the future.

According to a study led by Andreas Stohl the Norwegian Institute for Air Research, twice as much radioactive cesium-137 ? a cancer-causing agent ? was pumped into the atmosphere than Japan had announced, reaching 40 percent of the total from Chernobyl. The French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety found 30 times more cesium-137 was released into the Pacific than the plant's owner has acknowledged.

Under a detailed roadmap, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. will remove the melted nuclear fuel, most of which is believed to have fallen to the bottom of the core or even down to the bottom of the larger, beaker-shaped containment vessel, a process that is expected to begin in 10 years.

All told, decommissioning the plant will likely take 40 years.

Algeria leaders have lost touch, risk anger: review (Reuters)

ALGIERS (Reuters) ? Algeria's leaders are out of touch with their people who are growing increasingly angry about unemployment, red tape and poor housing, said a senior official carrying out a presidential review of the country's economic and social woes.

"Demands for radical changes are huge. People want to see a new way of governance," Mohamed Seghir Babes told Reuters in an interview.

He did not say that Algeria could face the kind of uprisings seen this year in its neighbors Tunisia and Libya and across the Arab world.

But his language, and his warning over public anger, were unusually strong for an official linked to the government.

"People are still unhappy. They are still demanding jobs, houses, less bureaucracy and a better life," he said.

Algeria, an OPEC member and supplier of about a fifth of Europe's imported gas, did see some riots in early 2011. But they died down after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika used emergency funds to raise state wages and subsidies.

Bouteflika also ended 19 years of unpopular emergency law and ordered Babes to carry out a seven-month tour of the country to take stock of Algerians' expectations.

"President Bouteflika asked me to visit the country, speak to the people in particular those representing the civil society, and come back with an answer as to 'Why is it that Algerians are still unhappy despite billions of dollars invested in economic and social programs'," Babes said.

Babes, who heads the National Economic and Social Council (CNES), said he found Algerian leaders "have lost touch with the people ... We must reconnect with the people ... A radical change and deep reform are essential to restore the link with the population."

He said people were particularly angry with a Centralized decision-making system which often overlooked the needs of local communities.

"This has to change rapidly. People are fed up," he added, citing the government's low-income housing program as an example of an unpopular scheme.

"The design of an apartment built in the capital Algiers should be different from one built in the desert, but in Algeria there is no difference because everything is decided in the capital," he said.

Babes said unemployment among graduates was "important" but could not give a figure. Official figures put unemployment at 10 percent but independent sources say it is much higher especially among the youth.

Algeria has launched a five-year development plan worth $286 billion to revive the economy.

With $188 billion in foreign currency reserves and huge oil and gas wealth, Algeria's socialist-style economic policymakers have, to date, not made attracting foreign investment a priority.

Brees sets passing mark, Saints top Falcons 45-16 (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? After Drew Brees broke an NFL passing record that stood for nearly three decades, his teammates called on him to make a speech in the Saints' locker room.

"This record isn't about one person. There might be just one name that goes in ledger under the record, but it's really about the team," Brees told his teammates. "I want everyone to feel a huge part of this, that this record would not have been possible without them."

It was quite a night for Brees and the Saints ? a record and a rout.

Brees set the NFL mark for yards passing in a season, breaking a record Dan Marino held for 27 years, and New Orleans wrapped up the NFC South title with a 45-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night.

Brees nearly topped Marino three years ago, finishing with 5,069 yards passing. But that pursuit rang a little hollow because the Saints were 8-8.

This time, Brees' prolific passing has led New Orleans (12-3) to the playoffs and a legitimate shot at its second Super Bowl in three seasons.

"We all want this (record) very badly," Brees began, "but it's all about winning and we know if we just focus on that, all that other stuff will take care of itself."

Brees threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns, the last a 9-yard strike to Darren Sproles that set the record with 2:51 to go.

It was Brees' final pass of the game and it gave him 5,087 yards passing ? with one game left. Marino finished with 5,084 yards for the Miami Dolphins in 1984.

Minutes after Brees broke the record, Marino offered congratulations on Twitter.

"Great job by such a special player," Marino wrote.

As Sproles spiked the ball, Brees thrust his fist triumphantly in the air and started walking toward the sideline while the Superdome crowd went wild and his teammates chased him down. Offensive guard Carl Nicks was the first one to get there and tried to lift Brees onto his shoulder, but couldn't do it as teammates swarmed around.

"If I could have put him on my shoulders and paraded him around the whole stadium I would have done that. He deserves it," Nicks said. "It's like a movie, man. Just a movie ending. It's beautiful. ... You could tell by everyone's reaction after he did it how much people care about that guy. We all love him."

Brees pushed his touchdown total to 276, moving him ahead of Joe Montana (273) and Vinny Testaverde (275) for ninth on the career list. The former Purdue star is the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for more than 5,000 yards twice.

Brees' first scoring pass went for 8 yards to Marques Colston and the second for 9 yards to Jimmy Graham. Graham's TD catch was his 10th of the season, a franchise high for a tight end. In the third quarter, Brees hit Robert Meachem for a score from 24 yards to make it 28-10.

The Saints (12-3) also had 463 total yards, giving them 6,857 offensive yards for the season, breaking the 2008 club record of 6,571. New Orleans continues to close in on the NFL record of 7,075 offensive yards set by the 2000 St. Louis Rams.

Brees might have broken the record in the third quarter if not for Sproles' 92-yard kickoff return, which set up John Kasay's 29-yard field goal. Brees also threw two interceptions, but New Orleans was still dominant enough to take a big lead.

The game became a romp when Julio Jones was stripped by Scott Shanle and Malcolm Jenkins returned it 30 yards for a score to make it 38-16 in the fourth quarter. The Superdome crowd was in full celebration by then, but the play also meant fans would have to wait until later in the fourth quarter before Brees finally got his chance to break the passing record.

The Saints can earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win Sunday over Carolina and a San Francisco loss at St. Louis, which is 2-13.

Atlanta (9-6) is headed to the playoffs as a wild card.

Uncharacteristically, Brees had only a yard passing during a span of a little more than 18 minutes in the second half. Fans howled, "Drehttp://wwww!" each time he took the field, and he finally gave them what they wanted after Atlanta failed on a fourth-down try at its own 33. That gave Brees, who needed only 30 yards for the record at that point, just enough space to work with.

The Saints didn't need another score, but Saints coach Sean Payton said he thought giving Brees a chance to go for the record was "appropriate."

Falcons coach Mike Smith diplomatically deflected questions about that, saying only, "It is our job to go out there and stop them. It doesn't matter if they are running the ball or throwing the ball."

Matt Ryan had 373 yards passing and one TD, including an early 21-yard scoring strike to Jones.

"We didn't really play well enough in any phase of the game to give ourselves a chance," said Smith, whose team came in with a chance to stay in the hunt for the division title. "It's not the type of effort that you want to have with so much on the line with what the outcome could have meant to our team."

Pierre Thomas scored New Orleans' first touchdown on a 4-yard run, after which he pulled a bow from his uniform pants, put it on the football and offered it as a gift to a woman with a parasol in the front row behind the end zone.

The referees weren't cutting Thomas any slack on his Christmas-themed celebration, flagging him for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Notes: Brees has passed for 300 yards or more an NFL-record 12 times this season. ... New England quarterback Tom Brady could also pass Marino next week ? and maybe even Brees, too. Brady has thrown for 4,897 yards. ... The Saints are 7-0 at home and never have gone undefeated at home in a full season.

Arab monitors head to Syria, government kills 20

(AP) ? The Arab League forged ahead with plans to send teams of monitors into Syria Monday even though President Bashar Assad's regime has only intensified its crackdown in the week since agreeing to halt bloodshed, killing several hundred civilians according to activists.

At least 20 more deaths were reported on Monday from intense shelling by government forces in the center of the country, just hours before the monitoring teams were to arrive. Activists said at least 275 civilians have been killed by government forces in the past week and another 150 people died in clashes between army defectors and regime troops ? most of them defectors.

The stepped up crackdown, including what activists said was a "massacre" in one town where 110 people were mowed down in several hours last week, brought a new round of international condemnation of Syria. Neighboring Turkey said the violence flew in the face of the Arab League deal that Syria signed and raises doubts about the regime's true intentions.

The Arab League plan agreed to by Assad requires the government to remove its security forces and heavy weapons from city streets, start talks with opposition leaders and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country. The monitors are supposed to ensure compliance, but so far there is no sign that Assad is implementing any of the terms, much less letting up on the brutal crackdown.

Members of the opposition say the regime's agreement to the Arab League plan is a farce.

"I very much doubt the Syrian regime will allow the observers to do their work," said prominent opposition figure Waleed al-Bunni from Cairo. "I expect them to try and hinder their movements by claiming that some areas are not safe, intimidating them or sending them to places other than the ones they should go to."

Syria's top opposition leader, doubtful that the Arab League alone can budge Assad, called Sunday for the League to bring the U.N. Security Council into the effort. The U.N. says more than 5,000 people have been killed since March in the political violence.

The opposition has warned that the government, which has been besieging the Baba Amr district in the city of Homs for days, was preparing a massive assault on the area. Activists said the forces shelled the area with mortars and sprayed heavy machine gun fire in the most intense assault since the siege began Friday.

The Baba Amr district has been a center for anti-government protests and army defections and has seen repeated crackdowns by the Syrian regime in recent months. The Syrian conflict is becoming increasingly militarized with growing clashes between army defectors and troops.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, described the attacks in Homs as a kind of "hysteria" as government forces desperately try to get the situation there under control ahead of the monitors' arrival.

"The observers are sitting in their hotel in Damascus while people are dying in Homs," he said.

The Observatory called on the monitors "to head immediately to Baba Amr to be witnesses to the crimes against humanity that are being perpetrated by the Syrian regime."

France expressed strong concerns about the continued deterioration of the situation in Homs and urged Syria's government to allow Arab League observers immediate access. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said Syrian authorities should allow the observers access to the city "starting this afternoon."

Although Syria showed no sign of altering its course, the Arab League said it was going ahead and officials declined to comment on the continued crackdown. Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby said 70 Arab monitors will arrive in the evening to join an advance team. Elaraby told reporters after meeting with the observers in Cairo that the mission will begin its work Tuesday. Up to 500 monitors are to be eventually deployed.

Anwar Malek, a member of the monitoring mission, insisted they will have absolute freedom of movement in Syria, adding that the team will travel to flashpoint cities including Homs, Aleppo, Daraa, Idlib and Hama. He and other observers refused to disclose the exact travel itinerary, saying they preferred to maintain some secrecy to ensure the mission's success.

Assad stalled for weeks on agreeing to the Arab League plan and signed only after the League threatened to turn to the U.N. Security Council to help stop the violence.

The opposition believes the authoritarian leader is only trying to buy time and forestall more international sanctions and condemnation.

Amateur videos posted by activists on the Internet showed gruesome footage of at least four corpses lying in pools of blood in front of a house in Baba Amr, where they reportedly died from mortar shells that struck the neighborhood.

Men could be heard crying for help and women wailing in the video, which also showed several destroyed homes and cars.

A resident of a neighborhood next to Baba Amr said he heard "loud explosions" throughout the night and Monday morning.

"It doesn't stop," he told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, for fear of reprisals.

The Local Coordination Committees activist network also reported intense shelling "targeting homes and anyone who moves" in Baba Amr.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch Maintains Allot Communications Buy ...

Bank of America Merrill Lynch maintained its Allot Communications (NASDAQ: ALLT) Buy rating and commented on Allot's sell-off in a research report published today.

In the report, Bank of America Merrill Lynch states, "This morning an article on Bloomberg news suggested that Allot's DPI (deep packet inspection) equipment may have been unlawfully distributed to Iran through Rantek, a Danish distributor. The stock is down ~5% on the news. Allot issued a press release which confirmed our view that many of the facts may have been taken out of context. We believe the sell-off is unwarranted and maintain our Buy on the stock."

Shares of Allot Communications were trading at $15.74 at the time of posting, down 5.69% from Thursday's market close.

Bess Rowen: The Bes(s)t Theatre of 2011

I have been reading a great deal of lists about the best theatre of 2011. Of course, the fundamental paradox of such lists is that one of the fantastic things about theatre is that every person can have their own reaction to it, and everyone's list is going to look quite different. Somewhere in between fervent nodding and angry headshaking, I realized that I want to make a different kind of list. Rather than looking at what was most "successful" in a traditional sense, here are the pieces that really excited me in terms of overall production quality. If you missed them, keep an eye out for these companies in the New Year!

Many of you already know that I absolutely love Punchdrunk's Sleep No More. The mash-up of interactive theatre, highly trained dancers/actors, and an impressive eye for creating a unique environment all combined to create a truly innovative theatre-going experience. Yet Sleep No More is just one of several shows with truly creative concepts this year.

Take, for example, The Complete & Condensed Stage Directions of Eugene O'Neill: Vol. 1 Early Plays/Lost Plays created and performed by the New York Neo-Futurists. This piece, about to return to New York for a few short days, consists of an actor reading Eugene O'Neill's stage directions aloud as the rest of the cast acts them out in a sharp, creative, and hilarious manner. (I will be writing a full post on this piece after I see the show again in January, so keep an eye out for it!) The show was excellent both in concept and practice, and it was able to be both intellectually interesting and purely entertaining simultaneously.

Another clearly unique show was She Kills Monsters, staged by the Flea Theater and their resident acting company, The Bats. Taking us in between the worlds of high school and Dungeons & Dragons, this production managed to stage visually exciting spectacles I would have thought impossible without a Broadway budget. I was so enthralled by this show that it remains in my mind despite its mostly mediocre stage combat. The Flea is a place that continues to expand the boundaries of what's possible Off-Off-Broadway.

Even further away from Broadway, St. Ann's Warehouse brought the National Theatre of Scotland to Dumbo last spring to produce two of the best overall productions I have seen this year. Beautiful Burnout and Black Watch, two pieces that are much more "traditional" than the plays I have been mentioning, were brought alive with creative staging and fantastic acting and directing. The use of physicality and physically trained actors in both of these pieces was also quite amazing to behold, and I felt energized by both of these plays. That kind of affective, exciting response is what is lacking in so many Broadway plays these days.

Another grouping of fantastic shows presents itself in the series of energetic, creative, and excellent Shakespearean productions this year. Target Margin Theater's The Tempest, New York Shakespeare Exchange's The Life and Death of King John, and Public Lab's Titus Andronicus were all very accessible productions that took me by surprise. At least two of those plays are rarely staged in general, but all three of these productions were true to the play while still maintaining their own styles and themes of performance and presentation.

Of course, there were some good shows on Broadway as well, the best of which is certainly David Henry Hwang's Chinglish, with Manhattan Theatre Club's Good People as a second choice. Yet the shows that are really pushing theatre in new directions are rarely, if ever, the kind of pieces conducive to a Broadway theatre. I enjoyed Young Jean Lee's We're Gonna Die, produced by 13P and Young Jean Lee's theatre company, but having her play with her band in Joe's Pub (of The Public Theater) would not have had the same effect of intimacy in a different space. The mix of autobiography, song, and audience participation would not have been possible elsewhere, and it is precisely that mix that made the piece so new.

There are so many more shows that I appreciated this year, but my purpose with this short annotated list is to remind everyone that there are unsung heroes in theatre. These are the companies and the productions that set out to do something different, knowing full well that they will never be as popular or successful as a Broadway theatre production. They aren't making theatre with that goal, and that is why they are able to produce some of the most inspiring and honest theatre you will ever see. To all of the playwrights, actors, directors, designers, and technicians that make this kind of theatre, please know that I am grateful to you and please keep doing what you're doing.

Happy Holidays to all everyone, and I can't wait to see what 2012 will bring.

NFL: Last-gasp touchdown seals win for Colts

Published: 6:15PM Friday December 23, 2011 Source: Reuters

The Indianapolis Colts scored a touchdown in the final minute to stun AFC South rivals Houston 19-16 at Lucas Oil Stadium today.

It was the second consecutive win for the Colts, who lost their first 13 games of a miserable season. The Texans (10-5), who have already clinched the division, suffered their second loss in a row.

Colts quarterback Dan Orlovsky connected with Reggie Wayne on a one-yard pass with 19 seconds left to cap an 78-yard, 12 play drive that was aided by two penalties against the Texans.

Houston struggled on offense after scoring their only touchdown on the third play of the game, a nine-yard run by Arian Foster following a fumble by Orlovsky on the opening play.

The Game Threatens to Fight Bottle-Throwing Fan ... Live in Concert!

The Game's concert in Norway got ugly last night when the rapper dodged a flying bottle. Not taking kindly to the near miss, he went into the crowd after the guy!

Game first warned the person, "Next time you throw something, I'm gonna ask someone next to you who threw it and we gon' jump over there and f--k you up."

That apparently didn't do the trick, since he charged into the crowd soon after. In the clip below, The Game can be heard saying, "You ain't so tough now, boy."

He then returned to the stage very quickly, so we're thinking no one ended up worse for the wear. Conflict resolution at its best. Check out the live exchange:

Judge rules Stanford competent to stand trial

Jailed Texas financier R. Allen Stanford is mentally competent to stand trial on charges he bilked investors out of $7 billion in a massive Ponzi scheme, a judge ruled Thursday

U.S. District Judge David Hittner's decision came after a nearly three-day competency hearing for the disgraced financier. Stanford's trial is set for Jan. 23.

Stanford had been declared incompetent in January due to an anti-anxiety drug addiction he developed while jailed in Houston. He spent more than eight months at a federal prison hospital in Butner, N.C., getting treatment for his addiction and being evaluated to determine if he had any long-term effects from being injured in a September 2009 jail fight.

A forensic psychologist who helped treat Stanford at the prison hospital testified the financier is now competent, can think clearly after being taken off the drug and has not suffered brain damage from the jail fight.

But four medical experts who testified on Stanford's behalf, including a neurologist and two forensic psychiatrists, said the financier suffered a traumatic brain injury in the jail fight that left him with severe memory loss and unable to think or communicate clearly.

Doctors who treated Stanford at the prison hospital and prosecutors accused him of faking symptoms of amnesia. He says he can't remember all events in his life prior to the prison fight.

Stanford's medical experts said they believed his memory loss was genuine. They said his brain injury, along with a major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder from the jail fight has left Stanford unable to assist his defense attorneys and to be ready for trial.

Those experts also testified his treatment for other medical conditions, including heart and liver problems, complicated his brain injury and memory loss.

Stanford and three former executives of his now-defunct Stanford Financial Group are accused of orchestrating a colossal pyramid scheme that advised clients from 113 countries to invest more than $7 billion in certificates of deposit, or CDs, at the Stanford International Bank on the Caribbean island of Antigua, promising huge returns.

Authorities say Stanford and the executives fabricated the bank's records, bribed Antiguan regulators with investors' money from a secret Swiss bank account and misused funds to pay for Stanford's lavish lifestyle.

Stanford became a billionaire whose financial empire stretched across the U.S., the Caribbean and Latin America. His attorneys say he ran a legitimate business. He has been jailed since he was indicted in June 2009 by a federal grand jury in Houston, where his companies were headquartered.

He faces 14 counts, including wire and mail fraud. .

Android 4.0.2 update now rolling out to GSM Galaxy Nexus

Android Central

The GSM (international) version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has just received its update to Android 4.0.2, hot on the heels of the Verizon version, which got the update on its launch day. Several GSM Nexus owners are now reporting that they've received the new version of Android, which carries the build number ICL53F.

The update weighs just 8.7MB, and according to the update message contains "important bug fixes", most likely the same fixes detailed in Verizon's latest update statement (excluding the LTE-specific stuff, of course).

To see if your phone is ready to receive the update, head to Settings > About phone > System updates. If it's still telling you you're already up-to-date, you may have to wait a few days before it's your turn to be updated. Don't want to wait? If you're comfortable with unlocking bootloaders and fiddling around with command-line stuff, once the files URL is located you'll be able to download them from Google and use Jerry's clever manual update method.

Now we get ready for Android 4.0.3.  Isn't having a Nexus phone grand?

Neighbor describes Ill. mom shooting child in yard (AP)

PONTIAC, Ill. ? A burst of gunfire sent Annelise Fiedler running out of her home to see what the noise was. In the yard next door, she saw 30-year-old Sara McMeen hovering over her baby as if she had dropped her. Fiedler asked McMeen if everything was all right.

"She looked at me and said, `No, everything is not all right,'" Fiedler told The Associated Press.

Then, Fiedler said, McMeen shot the baby. Fiedler fled for her life.

While authorities in the small Illinois farming community remained tight-lipped Saturday about the details of what they said was a murder-suicide that left five people dead, neighbors described shocking violence that took place outside, in full view of their homes. Some could see two of the children's bodies from their windows.

The dead included McMeen, her 29-year-old live-in boyfriend, Daniel Warren, and her three children, 8-year-old Skyler Lemke, 7-year-old Ian Lemke and 10-month-old Maggie Warren, authorities said.

Livingston County Sheriff Martin Meredith would not identify the shooter or disclose a possible motive for the shootings, which happened about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

A school bus had dropped off Skyler and Ian Lemke, along with several of their friends, moments earlier, neighbors said. The children were excited because it was the last day of school before Christmas break, said Ronald Groetsema, whose 12-year-old son was also on the bus.

From his home one street away, Groetsema heard an initial round of six to eight gunshots. A few minutes of silence passed. Then, he heard four to six shots more.

Dave Melton rushed home after getting a frantic call from his wife, who could see McMeen's backyard from her window.

"The kids are dead," she told him.

On Saturday, Melton stood in front of his home and pointed at the yard that backs up to his. A day earlier, he saw Ian Lemke's body on the step leading into the neighboring house and McMeen's and Skyler's bodies about 10 feet away.

"I stood here for a while, like, `This ain't happening,'" he said.

All five were pronounced dead at the scene. Meredith said investigators found a semi-automatic pistol there, but wouldn't say exactly where.

In a statement issued by authorities, Cynthia McMeen, Sara McMeen's mother, said family members "grieved over the loss of their loved ones."

"They realize this tragedy ... affects not only their family, but other families as well," she said in the statement. "The family is drawing together during this time, relying on God, and grieving."

Neighbors said McMeen and her family had moved recently to Emington, a speck of a town about a half-mile long with just 117 residents. Surrounded by miles of farmland covered in frost, it's a place where "you drive 15 miles in any direction to get to anywhere else," Pastor Pam Gansch-Boythe said.

The family rented a home that, according to longtime resident Bob Young, was known as the "banker's house" before the town bank closed years ago. A woman who said her brother-in-law now owned it declined to comment when reached by telephone.

Meredith said the two older children attended school in nearby Saunemin, where Skyler was in second grade and Ian was in first grade. The children were well-known in the neighborhood, but the adults were not.

Fiedler said she had heard a man and woman fighting next door three times over the past few months. She said the couple kept "very much to themselves."

Melton said he had spoken to McMeen "just a little bit," usually when he was in his own backyard.

About 30 people gathered in an Emington church Saturday morning to pray and try to understand what happened. Some residents said they had moved from larger towns to find a safe, quiet place to raise their families.

Beth Barcikowski, who lives across the street from McMeen's house, said her children used to play with the Lemkes. Skyler would come to their home before and after getting on the school bus, Barcikowski said.

She's haunted by the idea that the little girl was shot just as she arrived home from school.

"Just wishing she would've come here first," Barcikowski said.

NAGPUR, India (AP) ? A high school student in central India was recognized as the world's shortest woman by Guinness World Records on Friday as she turned 18 and said she hopes to earn a degree and make it in Bollywood.

Jyoti Amge stood just 62.8 centimeters (24.7 inches) tall ? shorter than the average 2-year-old ? when Guinness representatives visiting from London measured her at a ceremony attended by about 30 relatives and friends in the town of Nagpur, in Maharashtra state.

A teary-eyed Amge, dressed in one of her finest saris, called the honor an "extra birthday present" and said she felt grateful for being small, as it had brought her recognition. After receiving a plaque, she and her guests cut a birthday cake.

"I have put Nagpur on the world map. Now everyone will know where it is," said Amge, who says she dreams of one day becoming a Bollywood film star as well as pursuing a university degree after she finishes high school this year.

"I want to be an actor," she said.

She measured 7 centimeters (2.76 inches) shorter than 22-year-old American Bridgette Jordan, who had held the title since September.

"Jyoti encourages us all to look beyond mere size and to just celebrate our differences," Guinness adjudicator Rob Molloy said.

This was not Amge's first Guinness record. Until Friday she was considered the world's shortest teenager, but in turning 18 qualified for the new title. She has grown less than 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) in the last two years, Guinness said in a statement, and will grow no more due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

Her teenage title brought the chance for multiple Guinness-sponsored trips to Japan and Italy for tours and meetings with other record holders, she said.

The title of shortest woman in history continues to be held by Pauline Musters, who lived in the Netherlands from 1876 to 1895 and stood 61 centimeters (24 inches) tall.

Call to Ban Cell Phones While Driving Is Absurd (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is calling for a ban on the use of all cell phones, including hands free models for all drivers. According to tgdaily.com, it is because "more than 3,000 people lost their lives last year in distraction-related accidents." This study doesn't say if these are cell phone-related or not, but we'll assume they are. Should such a ban be enacted?

Why is it that we feel it is necessary to infringe on people's freedoms just because there are people out there who have no personal responsibility? Because 3,000 people have been involved in accidents, all drivers should not be punished equally. This is the wrong approach. This is no different than using a double load of buckshot to swat a fly, more than just the fly is going to suffer or not allowing McDonald's to put toys in their Happy Meals because some parents can't control what their children eat.

Government doesn't need to control everything its citizens do. Each time we let them intrude in one area, they will find something else to stick their nose into, using the argument that "We already are doing this so we might as well as do that." As an example, let's say we ban the use of cell phones because we don't want distracted drivers and then we find there is a lot of accidents caused by people who are changing their radio stations. Do we then ban the listening of radios in vehicles, citing the precedent of the banning of cell phones? After all, it is another distraction and people have been killed.

In the meantime, we continue to allow drivers who haven't taken a driving test in 50 or more years to renew their licenses without having to prove they are still capable of reacting in time to avoid accidents, or distinguishing the difference between the gas and brake pedals. Perhaps there haven't been enough deaths caused by elderly drivers yet to require action?

If 3,000 deaths is a lot, isn't even one death too much? Absolutely, but not when you compare it to the deaths of approximately 1.2 million people who are legally aborted every year right here in America, according to the Wiley Online Library. What are these deaths we seem to not be concerned about? This is the number of abortions performed in 2008. Where is the outcry on this?

German manufacturing shrinks for 3rd month in December: PMI (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? German manufacturing contracted for a third straight month in December and looked unlikely to provide a lift to Europe's largest economy soon as new orders continued to dry up, a survey showed on Thursday.

The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the sector by Markit showed a slight improvement, edging up to 48.1 from 47.9 in November, but it remained well below the 50 mark separating growth from contraction.

With economic headwinds picking up in the wake of Europe's sovereign debt crisis and slackening global demand, the figures left economists skeptical of whether a downturn could be avoided.

A forward-looking sub-index tracking new orders added to the downbeat picture for the months ahead, rising only slightly to 43.9 from 43.2 in what marked another strong contraction.

"Incoming new orders in manufacturing, and exports, are still falling at a very steep pace," said Chris Williamson at Markit. "Much steeper than the rate of decline in output suggests is necessary at this stage."

"What is worrying is that the rate of decline is only being stopped from falling further by companies eating into their backlogs of work," he added, referring to survey details.

Germany's export-driven economy recovered quickly from the 2008/09 financial crisis but the outlook has darkened as euro zone debt worries have begun to weigh on the real economy.

Domestic demand helped it grow a healthy 0.5 percent in the third quarter, but investor morale has since soured, fuelling expectations of a sharp slowdown going into the new year.

TREAT WITH CAUTION

Such concerns were again underlined on Wednesday, when researchers at the country's Ifo economic institute halved their growth forecasts for 2012 to a meager 0.4 percent.

Citing falling corporate investment by domestic firms as well as downward pressure on exports, Ifo went as far as to say the country could slide into recession if the euro zone debt crisis deepens.

Data last week rammed that point home, showing exports posting their biggest fall in half a year in a sign that Germany was no longer immune from the effects of the debt crisis on its key euro zone export markets.

Thursday's PMI manufacturing figures also took the shine off stronger-than-expected activity in the services sector, which in a separate index showed growth picking up to 52.7 from 50.3 a month earlier -- its best reading since July.

That reflects a more mixed picture painted by other recent data on German economic activity and the scale of its slowdown, which has in turn led some economists to believe a recession can be averted.

The latest Ifo business sentiment index for example rose unexpectedly in November for the first time in nearly half a year, while industrial output for October also beat expectations, bouncing back after a steep fall.

Markit's Williamson however remained cautious, pointing out that it is too early to say if slight improvements in the German as well as French readings mean a turning point was coming in the near future or if further deterioration could be expected.

"This is December, which is a very difficult month to take the temperature of any economy," he said of the PMI. "It can be a very volatile month.. It is encouraging but to be treated with caution."

More than 100 million EU citizens have never surfed web (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Almost a quarter of the European Union's 500 million people have never used the Internet and there is a widening division between the web-savvy north of Europe and the poorer south and east, figures released on Wednesday showed.

More than half the population of Romania and just under half of those in Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Portugal do not have Internet access at home, according to the figures from Eurostat, the EU's statistical agency.

As well as highlighting geographic disparities across one of the world's most-developed regions, the figures underline the lack of opportunity people in poorer communities have to take part in advances such as the Internet that have delivered lower cost goods and service to millions of people.

"For many people today it seems difficult to live without the Internet," Eurostat said.

"However, a decreasing, but still non-negligible, part of the EU population has never used it," it added, reporting that 24 percent of 16-74 year olds across the 27 countries in the European Union have never accessed the Internet.

Although overall Internet access has risen in the past five years, the range is still wide, with just 45 percent of the population connected in Bulgaria compared with 94 percent in the Netherlands.

Others in the top tier include Luxembourg, Sweden and Denmark, all with access rates of 90 percent or above.

At the bottom end of the scale, 54 percent of those in Romania have never used the Internet, whether via home access, at an Internet cafe or over a smart phone.

Those countries with the lowest usage rates also tend to be those with the least number of fixed-line broadband connections and those that make least use of e-commerce -- buying goods and services online.

Online business is most advanced in Britain, Denmark and Sweden where it contributed between 5.8 percent and 7.2 percent of total gross domestic product in 2009, according to the Boston Consulting Group.

Britain, the EU's third largest economy after Germany and France, has become the dominant force in online commerce and government services, with more than 80 percent of 16-74 year olds making Internet purchases in the past year.

The lowest rates were again recorded in Romania and Bulgaria, with just 13 percent of those surveyed.

Perhaps one of the survey's more surprising results was that Spain, a modern economy at the heart of Europe, has a relatively modest rate of Internet access and e-commerce use: just 64 percent of households are connected and only 39 percent of people shop online, the figures showed.

Dutch senate debates ritual slaughter ban (AP)

AMSTERDAM ? Political support for a ban on the ritual slaughter of animals without stunning them first, as required by centuries-old Jewish and Muslim dietary traditions, has weakened as the Dutch senate debates the legislation.

The ban proposed by an animal rights party and widely endorsed by Dutch voters passed parliament's lower house by a 116-30 margin in June.

But after an international outcry by religious groups, several political parties said Tuesday they were reconsidering their positions, citing concerns about whether the ban would violate constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion.

Speaking first, Labor senator Nico Schrijver said his party now wants better enforcement of existing slaughter rules instead.

Senators are scheduled to vote Dec. 20.

Israel attorney general won't back funding limits

(AP) ? Israel's attorney general has informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that bills proposing restrictions on funding for dovish groups are unconstitutional.

Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein says if parliament approves the bills, he won't defend them in court.

On Wednesday, The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter Weinstein wrote to Netanyahu over the weekend stating his position.

Weinstein writes that the attorney general normally refrains from declaring laws unconstitutional, but said that he would make an exception because of the "blatancy" of the case.

Threat to European ratings deflates a stock rally (AP)

Reports that all countries using the euro could get their credit ratings downgraded deflated a morning rally in the stock market Monday. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 78 points, giving back much of a 167-point gain from earlier.

News reports in the afternoon said Standard & Poor's would put all nations that use the euro on "creditwatch negative," meaning there is a 50-50 chance of a downgrade in the coming months. S&P had warned of possible rating demotions for many of the countries. The inclusion on the list of Germany, Europe's strongest economy, was the biggest surprise.

After the market closed, S&P confirmed that it had placed 15 nations on notice for possible downgrades. Two countries that use the euro weren't affected: Cyprus already had that designation and Greece already has ratings low enough to suggest that it's likely to default soon anyway.

Stocks rose in the morning after the leaders of France and Germany called for a new treaty to impose greater fiscal discipline on European countries. Yields on Italian government bonds receded sharply after the new government of Mario Monti introduced sweeping austerity measures over the weekend. That suggests traders believe Italy is less likely to default.

"There's pent-up demand, and people will use any excuse to get back in, thinking there's been too much pessimism," said Brian Gendreau, investment strategist with Cetera Financial Group. Despite strong signals about the U.S. economy, the market has been weighed down by negative headlines about the U.S. budget impasse, credit-rating downgrades of the U.S. and other nations, and Europe's spreading crisis, Gendreau said.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 78.41 points, or 0.7 percent, to 12,097.83.

The gains were broad. All 10 industry groups in the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose. Financials stocks were among the biggest winners. Investors have feared that U.S. banks might be dragged down by their close connections to the unstable European financial system.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. jumped 3.7 percent, the most in the Dow. Bank of America was the second-biggest gainer, 2.7 percent. Citigroup Inc. rose 5.9 percent, Morgan Stanley 6.8 percent.

The S&P 500 rose 12.8, or 1 percent, to 1,257.1. The Nasdaq rose 28.83, or 1.1 percent, to 2,655.76.

Investors are hoping that a summit of European leaders on Thursday and Friday will produce concrete measures to prevent a messy breakup of the euro currency, which is shared by 17 nations. Markets have been jittery because of fears that the euro might disintegrate, causing a sharp recession in Europe that would spread through the world economy.

The main Italian stock index jumped 2.9 percent as Italian bond yields dropped to their lowest level in a month. The yield on the 10-year Italian bond plunged half a percentage point to 5.93 percent. It rose above 7 percent last month, a level at which other nations were forced to take bailouts. By comparison, bond yields in Germany, Europe's largest and most stable economy, are roughly 2 percent.

Analysts say bailing out Italy would be too costly and would hurt the credit standing of German and France, which have the strongest economies in the euro group.

Monday's gains follow the best week in more than two years for U.S. stock indexes. The S&P 500 rose 7.4 percent last week, the most since March 2009. The Dow jumped 7 percent, the most since July 2009.

In corporate news:

? Gannett Co. leapt 10.2 percent after the media company was upgraded to "buy" from "neutral" by analysts at Lazard Capital Markets.

? Incyte Corp. fell 2 percent after a Citigroup analyst downgraded the drug maker to "neutral" from "buy," saying its new blood-disease drug Jakafi might not work as a long-term treatment.

? SuccessFactors Inc. soared more than 50 percent after the company agreed to be sold to German software company SAP for $3.4 billion. SuccessFactors makes software specializing in human resources tasks. The deal is part of SAP's plan to compete with software rival Oracle Corp.
