Delayed tornado recovery aid strains Madison County budget

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Almost a year after the April 27th tornadoes, Madison County districts are still standing by for federal and state reimbursements.

The funding would help cover what the county spent on debris removal after the 2011 storm.

Roger Jones, Madison County Commissioner of District 1, said he's still waiting to see about $900,000 worth of FEMA and state reimbursements.

Jones said that money could be put to good use for other county projects like road improvements.

"If we could get that money it would really help us out," said?Jones.?"We could put that money into money we used from roads into roads now."

Jones said dipping into the budget to cover cleanup costs means money lost on other projects.

"We don't have any money in our budget for tornado removal so we just have to handle it the best we can," he said.?

The financial problems?don't end there.?Jones said his district's designated landfill is nearly full thanks to tornado debris buildup.

A state moratorium on issuing additional permits for new landfills means the county may have to consider other options that could be more expensive.

"If we go to the private companies, it would really increase the cost," he said.?"We wouldn't be as efficient I think if we couldn't permit another landfill for the county."

Jones said he will address these concerns at the Madison County Commission meeting scheduled for Monday, 10 a.m. at the Madison County Courthouse.
