Disney set to unveil first Latina princess, Sofia

There has been Jasmine and Belle, Mulan and Pocahontas, but never before has there been a Latina Disney princess.

Until now.

Disney is about five weeks away from the introduction of?Princess Sofia, who will make her debut on the Disney Channel on Nov. 18 in TV movie Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, ahead of a 2013 TV series on both Disney Channel and Disney Junior. The TV movie and the show are geared toward viewers age 2-7.

Some may say that Sofia doesn?t look very Latina and others might say Hispanics come in all shades, but Disney says she is.

During a recent press tour, one blogger pointed out that in concept art, Sofia?s mother, Miranda, the newly crowned queen of Enchancia, had a darker complexion than the other characters, according to Entertainment Weekly. ?She is Latina,? executive producer Jamie Mitchell said of the character, acknowledging that this makes Sofia the first Latina princess to appear in a Disney animation project.

Set in the storybook world of Enchancia, the movie introduces Sofia, a regular girl whose life suddenly transforms when her mother marries the king and she becomes a princess, Sofia the First. Disney?s Cinderella makes an appearance in the movie to offer Sofia some words of wisdom as she learns to navigate the life of royalty.

While producers say she is Latina, they don?t make a point of pushing that fact.??We never actually call it out,? said Joe D?Ambrosia, vice president of Disney Junior original programming. ?When we go into schools [to talk to young students about the show], what I find fascinating is that every girl thinks that they?re Sofia.?

Ariel Winter from ?Modern Family? will voice Sofia and Sara Ramirez from ?Grey?s Anatomy? will be Queen Miranda.

No need to bust a hemorrhoid on this one. In my family (Mexican) I have dark skinned black- eyed and blonde and blue eyed relatives. We all consider ourselves latino.

Love the idea of a Hispanic Princess, my beautiful baby niece is named Sofia so this is just perfect, Disney doing the right thing!

So what makes her latina? She looks like a white chick with blue eyes... the only indication I can see that she's supposed to be latina is Disney saying she is.

wait so...why does she have super white skin and blue eyes? yes I realize that many latinos have very light skin and light eyes (i have brown eyes but I'm pretty damn pale lol), but if you are making a character that is supposed to represent minorities, making her look like the majority... is ridiculously moot. PASS.

Disney, although I appreciate the fact in your attempt to recognize the diversity among my culture ie, blue eyes, light skin, lighter tones of hair...I don't appreciate Sofia being labeled as a Latina when you yourself admit "We never actually call it out" on Sofia being Latina...so the public is suppose to believe Sofia is Latina just because you say so? I beg to differ...I seriously hope you embrace introducing Latin culture into the project which will allow us Latina's(os) to relate to Sofia as a Latina...otherwise you get an "F" for a deceptive attempt to sale an image you yourselves are not embracing...

If you travel to latin countries you'll see that not all latinas are dark with dark features. My cousins in mexico are "white" looking. The spanish, the french, german and jewish people have been to mexico. The germans actually introduced the Accordion to mexico. I talk about mexico because it's my roots, but I know plenty of people from argentina, colombia, and other latin countries that look white. You can't say that she looks like a "white " girl. My daughter has blue eyes and light skin and she's mexican!

I think she looks Latina! Latinas usually have light/tan skin brown eyes & hair! I love it because my name is Sofia, I'm Latina an those are my characteristics. ;)

I like her hair color and skin complexion but the eye color should've been brown. I also like that the spelling of the name is Sofia with an F and not PH. But, please let it not be after Sofia Vergara nor have her accent.

Alright so this is getting annoying look if no buddy likes the way the first latina girl looks then go to college apply for an application and make your own latina get over it, if you ask me this looks good to me shes cute ima dress my lil girl up in that costume.

What does it mean to look Latina? We come in all shades and sizes. I am 100% Latina the daughter of parents born in Mexico.... have light skin and hazel eyes. When I was born I had blond hair. My mother has a medium complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. My father blue/hazel eyes and light skin. What matters is what is in our hearts and the blood that runs through our veins that indicates we are Hispanics. So what if Disney decided to introduce a Sofia with Dark Brown Skin and Long Black Braids is that what you believe a Hispanic should look like? Disney did what any marketer would do move forward with a character that would connect with the largest audience.... whether Hispanic or Not.

Hispanic or Latino is neither a race nor a specific phenotype. What this article is implying is that this princess should have an indigenous (Native American) phenotype, of which not all Latinos or Hispanics have. All of the races that comprise the Latino or Hispanic groups of the Western Hemisphere had princesses at some point in history. But, what you have to remember is that the term Hispanic was made up to group all of the Spanish-speaking populations within the United States in the 70's. Latino comes from the name of the region, Latin America, which was named so by Napoleon. So, be happy because we have a rich variety of cultures that many wish to lump into a single one. On that note, I am happy that they do not specify one specific origin. Finally, if you don't like it, then change the channel; Because I am sure that we must all look like Dora and Diego.

I agree with there being a lot of Latinas that come in different different skin tones, I have only to look at my family to see that it's true. However, any other movie where they created an "ethnic" character, they made sure that the ethnicity was well known. In Brave, the main character was Irish and had the quintessential red curly hair and brogue, Pocahontas had a very definitive native American look, Mulan was absolutely Chinese, and Princess Tiana in The Princess and the Frog was undoubtedly African -American. For Mulan, Princess Tiana, and brave they used actresses from the backgrounds they were representing. If they really wanted to make this princess a closer to being considered a Latina one, they could have incorporated the same. I'm not as excited about this one as I was about the Princess and the Frog. Blah to this.

Make her a little more tan; give her a sun glow. Then all little brown latina girls will feel like there is a princess like them. And Cinderella coming out to give Sofia Wise words is a bit redundant as Sofia Means wisdom and she should seek that out for herself. From one Sofia to another... lol And I LOVE that Sara Ramirez is part of this! Especially if she sings! Good job overall Disney. Its about time! :-) Go #latinos2012!
