Customs stops delaying HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE devices after 'review'

HTC-branded crates have been trickling through customs for ten days already, following a total clamp-down earlier in May, but it's only now that they're able to pass through without lengthy extra checks. The manufacturer says it has "completed the review process with US Customs" and that it is "confident that we will soon be able to meet the demand for our products." That obviously raises the question as to why the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE devices were held up in the first place. The ITC had earlier ruled that HTC infringed on an Apple patent about data detection, concerning a handset's ability to recognize and move around personal data, for example between the contact entry and the calendar, and it had given HTC until April to remove that feature. HTC agreed to that, but it appears customs officials initially needed to check every box to ensure that products arriving in the US were of the compliant type. Meanwhile, the LTE part of the EVO 4G is still waiting for its luggage.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's stock has fallen below $30 for the first time since its much-awaited public debut this month.

The stock fell $3.07, or 9.6 percent, to close at $28.84 on Tuesday. That's down 24 percent since its public stock debut. It went as low as $28.65 earlier in the day.

Facebook Inc. began trading publicly on May 18 following one of the most anticipated stock offerings in history.

The site, which was born in a Harvard dorm room eight years ago and has grown into a worldwide network of almost a billion people, was supposed to offer proof that social media is a viable business and more than a passing fad.

Facebook's initial public offering of stock priced at $38 and raised $16 billion for Facebook and some of its early investors. It had valued the company at $104 billion ? more than Amazon.com Inc., at $98 billion, at the time.

But the stock's public debut was marred by technical glitches at the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading.

And the company, along with the investment banks that led the IPO, is the subject of at least two shareholder lawsuits. They allege that analysts at the large underwriting investment banks cut their financial forecasts for Facebook just before the IPO and told only a handful of clients. Morgan Stanley has declined to comment. Facebook calls the lawsuits "without merit."

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said that Facebook's stock has been hurt by what he called "near-term issues" that include the Nasdaq glitches, an oversupply of stock that was being offered and the allegations of selective information disclosure.

But he rates the stock "Outperform" and has a 12-month target price of $44.

"Facebook has built a huge moat between it and its competitors, and we endorse Mr. Zuckerberg's mission," he wrote in a note to investors Tuesday, referring to Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg.

With the latest drop, Facebook's value is about $79 billion.

Chrome OS review (version 19)

It seems like yesterday that we reviewed the inaugural Samsung Series 5 Chromebook running Google's Chrome OS, an operating system for laptops based on Chrome. It was, from the start, a world in which everything from music playback to document creation happened in browser tabs. Since we last checked in a year ago, Google has addressed some early complaints -- the browser can actually stream Netflix now! -- but it's only just getting around to ticking off some other long-standing grievances, like multitasking.

The company just announced two new Chrome OS devices -- the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 550 and Chromebox Series 3 -- and both run a spanking-new build of the OS that ushers in a simplified desktop with customizable wallpaper and the ability to minimize, maximize and close windows -- oh my! More importantly, you can now view multiple windows onscreen, edit docs offline and pin shortcuts to the bottom of the screen -- a combination that promises some seriously improved multitasking. Other goodies: built-in Google Music, Google+ and Hangouts, along with a basic photo editor, redesigned music player and enhanced remote desktop app. So does all this add up to an upgrade meaty enough to make the skeptics give Chrome OS a second look? Could it be time for you to get the low-tech person in your life a Chromebook? Let's see.

Dinwiddie Animal Control seizes 60 equines from horse advocate

Citing malnourishment and a lack of medical care, authorities seized 60 equines Wednesday from a woman who once belonged to a regional nonprofit dedicated to rehabilitating needy horses.

Veterinarians brought in to assess the animals belonging to former Central Virginia Horse Rescue board member Sara Johnson were still combing through the herd on the Johnson's sprawling, 124-acre property on Thursday afternoon.

Law enforcement officers are keeping a 24-hour watch on the horses and donkeys as the investigation into mistreatment continues, said Dinwiddie's Chief Warden, Debbie Broughton. Dinwiddie does not have the resources to house this many seized animals, she said. For now, they will remain penned up at the Johnson's $866,000 estate in the 11000 block of White Oak Road, less than five miles from Animal Control.

Broughton said that some of the Johnsons' animals are extremely emaciated and score the worst possible mark on a nine-point scale used to gauge horse body condition and well-being. The entire herd is being treated for malnutrition and assessed for illnesses.

A woman who answered the Johnsons' home phone on Thursday declined to comment. The Johnsons will appear in Dinwiddie General District Court on Monday for a hearing related to the search and seizure, Broughton said.?

Commonwealth's Attorney Lisa Caruso said that she could not discuss an ongoing investigation.

Cindy Smith, a founding member of the horse rescue group that Sara Johnson belonged to in 2010, said that she was shocked to learn of her friend's situation. She also said that she felt partly responsible for failing to intervene after Johnson sent her an e-mail in January seeking support.

The Cloud Preview: NVIDIA Flaunts Upcoming Cloud-Based Game Demo

It?s been a few weeks since NVIDIA announced their powerful line-up of cloud-hosted GPUs in the context of the shift towards Gaming-As-A-Service paradigm. The core gaming version of the Kepler architecture, the NVIDIA GeForce GRID, is bound to do away with the requirement for conventional consoles in the gaming field. The innovative cloud service hinted at a streamlined gaming experience from smartphones, TVs, tablets and personal computers alike. Critics, however, expressed serious concerns over latency and device power consumption associated with this particular type of cloud-based computational model when deployed for gaming.

NVIDIA has recently responded with a crystal-clear answer?an impressive demonstration of the highly awaited, free-to-play, downloadable game Hawken, powered by the GeForce GRID. The online robot- combat-themed title is set to be released in the coming fall.

The chief executive of NVIDIA, Jen-Hsun Huang, and chief executive of Gaikai (the renowned cloud gaming platform) proudly demoed how an individual playing Hawken on a smart TV could compete against someone with an android-based tablet. The demonstration is absolutely jaw-dropping when you take into account that Hawken is inherently a non-disk-based online game. The demonstration clearly indicates that NVIDIA?s cloud-based technology alleviates the need for dedicated cutting-edge, bit-crunching graphics hardware aimed at delivering a compelling gaming experience.

The demonstrated title was more of a cross between Call of Duty and Mech Warrior. The plot is set in the ruins of a modern city where players can be found engaged in nail-biting gun fights. The visual appeal of the game is unprecedented, particularly for a downloadable first-person shooter. Courtesy of NVIDIA-fueled cloud technology, Hawken is set to reach out to an exceptionally larger audience than it otherwise could ever have done without it.

?What is more fun than a mech first-person shooter?? Huang flaunted.

Having backed League of Legends last year, the investors behind the game, FirstMark Capital and Benchmark Capital, are fairly confident that the project will come off with flying colors. Hawken is under development at Adhesive Games, a small game development team from California. The completed title will be boasted by Meteor Entertainment.

With a lot more in store, cloud-based gaming is bound to redefine the dynamics of electronic leisure. With computational power as gigantic as offered by the NVIDIA GeForce, conventional gaming is facing a bumpy road ahead for sure, unless conventional gaming has similar plans for moving to the cloud (even if it?s only partial). Time will reveal what?s in store.

Organ trafficking ring-leader arrested in Israel

Israeli organ trafficking ring leader Moshe Harel

A European Union (EU) prosecutor says an Israeli man suspected of running an organ trafficking network has been arrested in Israel.

?We have received information that Moshe Harel has been arrested in Israel on organ trafficking and other related offences,? EU special prosecutor Jonathan Ratel said.

Harel is wanted in Kosovo, where he and his colleagues reportedly carried out some 30 illegal kidney transplants and removals. Kosovo authorities have issued an international arrest warrant for him.

Harel?s trafficking ring used to prey on donors from poor Eastern European and Asian countries, who were promised about 15,000 euros (USD 19,000) to become organ donors.

Israel has not yet confirmed Harel?s arrest.

Reports earlier this week by Ha?aretz, indicate that at least 10 Israeli citizens were arrested for being members of an organ trafficking gang.

The Italian New Generation Foundation for Human Rights and the Everyone Group has presented evidence indicating that Sinai locals harvest the organs of the people they transfer to Israel. In this connection, a number of mass graves have been found containing the corpses of Africans missing some of their organs.

Separate food fact from fiction

We?ve all heard certain ?facts? about nutrition so many times that we take them at face value, no longer questioning their validity. I?m going to knock a hole in a few of the things we ?know? to be true about food.

Let?s start with the food that?s hardest to avoid: sugar. Those who?ve ever attempted the Atkins Diet or simply tried to avoid sugar probably got a rude
awakening when they started reading labels. Sugar is hiding everywhere: lunch meat, ketchup, salad dressings. The average person in the U.S. consumes about ?128 pounds? a year, or 34 teaspoons a day.

Super-size fountain drink, anyone?

But what about sugar causing hyperactivity in kids? Controlled studies prove that?s false. And doesn?t eating sugar put a person at risk for diabetes? No.

What causes diabetes is lack of inactivity, being overweight and a high-calorie diet. Diabetes patients have to cut way down on sugar, but just don?t go there.

Perhaps you?ve heard that brown sugar is healthier than white sugar. Sorry to disappoint, but brown sugar is white granulated sugar with molasses added. The mineral content between the two is insignificant at the end of the day.

Sugar is a refined food that?s been stripped of fiber, water, vitamins and minerals. Avoid foods that list a variant of it as its first three ingredients. This
includes dextrose, lactose, sucrose and maltose. Sugar is calories without nutrients, so picture that 128-pound pile and try to make a dent in it. The ?brown vs. white? myth has carried over into the egg department as well. While they may look more natural, brown eggs have no additional nutritional benefits over white. Nor are they higher quality or more flavorful. Hen color determines the eggshell color. White feather hens lay white eggs; red feather
hens lay brown eggs.

While we?re on the subject of protein, I?ll dispel a few other myths. Low-carb diets will cause temporary weight loss but are not a good long-term idea. You may end up ingesting too much cholesterol, which ups the risk of heart disease. Too few fruits and whole grains can lead to a lack of fiber and constipation. Too few carbs can also make a person feel tired, weak or nauseous. Being wobbly at a party can really detract from a girl?s beautiful size 6 cocktail dress.

Another risk of too few carbs is the buildup of ketones in your blood. The kickoff of the Atkins diet is designed to put your body ?in ketosis? ? but over
time, these ketones cause the body to produce a lot of uric acid, a risk factor for joint swelling (gout) and kidney stones. You?ll also notice your new bad
breath, and your friends may too.

Ketosis makes the body use fat instead of carbs as an energy source. The weight you lose may well be lean muscle and water. So much better to reduce
calories, fat and exercise.

Final myth: cabbage soup and grapefruit burn fat. Nope, sorry, reread the last few paragraphs. You?ll just lose water weight, lean muscle and feel tired
and queasy. And that?s the truth!

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The U.S.-led coalition on Sunday disputed reports that eight civilians, including children, were killed in a NATO airstrike in a remote part of eastern Afghanistan.

Afghan officials said an airstrike Saturday night killed eight members of a family, but a senior NATO official said that so far, there is no evidence of any civilian casualties. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose the information.

Separately, NATO reported that three coalition service members were killed Sunday in eastern Afghanistan ? two during an insurgent attack and one from a roadside bombing.

Four others, including a British soldier, were killed in the south on Saturday, bringing to 169 the number of NATO deaths in Afghanistan so far this year. The British Ministry of Defense said the soldier was killed in an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj region of southern Helmand province. The nationalities of the other three have not been disclosed.

The coalition said it was working to find out more about allegations that civilians were killed in the NATO operation that foreign forces were conducting Saturday night in Paktia province.

The killing of civilians by foreign forces has been a major irritant in Afghan President Hamid Karzai's relationship with his international partners. He warned earlier this month that civilian casualties could undermine a strategic partnership with the U.S. that is to govern long-term relations after most international troops withdraw by the end of 2014.

Karzai appointed a delegation to travel to Paktia province and determine what happened.

Frequently, Afghan and coalition officials offer differing accounts of military operations.

In those cases, local residents claim civilians were killed, while the coalition says the victims had been identified as insurgents. Later, if investigations prove that civilians were inadvertently killed, the coalition acknowledges its mistake.

Rohullah Samon, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said Mohammad Shafi, his wife and their six children were killed in the airstrike around 8 p.m. in Suri Khail village of Gurda Saria district.

"Shafi was not a Taliban. He was not in any opposition group against the government. He was a villager," Samon said. "Right now, we are working on this case to find out the ages of their children."

Such attacks damage the civilian population's trust in international troops who have been fighting in the country for more than a decade.

Taliban attacks have killed more civilians than foreign forces, but public anger over the issue is usually directed at the international forces.

Tensions spiked after Afghan officials reported that 18 civilians were killed in four recent airstrikes in Logar, Kapisa, Badghis and Helmand provinces. That led Karzai to issue his warning earlier this month.

"If the lives of Afghan people are not safe, the signing of the strategic partnership has no meaning," Karzai's office said.

Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians in the Afghan war, with 3,021 killed as insurgents ratcheted up violence with suicide attacks and roadside bombs, the United Nations said in its latest report on civilian deaths.

The U.N. attributed 77 percent of the deaths to insurgent attacks and 14 percent to actions by international and Afghan troops. Nine percent of cases were classified as having an unknown cause. The U.N. attributed 187 civilian deaths last year to aerial attacks, an increase of 9 percent over 2010.

Elsewhere Sunday, two civilians were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Marjah district of Helmand province in the south, provincial spokesman Daud Ahmadi said.

Law is easily one of the more well-known names in the coaching ranks at BYU. He had a major league career that included an All-Star nomination. P

But his success rate at BYU, especially over the last five years, simply did not fit in with the on-field winning culture that athletic director Tom Holmoe has insisted upon.

That way his so-called ?attack? on private equity is neither a personal attack on Mitt Romney nor a generalized attack on American business.

It?s an attack on a particular kind of capitalism that Romney and JPMorgan both practice: Using other peoples? money to make big bets which, if they go wrong, can wreak havoc on the economy.

It?s the substitution of casino capitalism for real capitalism, the dominance of the betting parlor over the real business of America, financial innovation rather than product innovation.

It?s been terrible for the American economy and for our democracy.

It?s also why Obama has to come out swinging about JPMorgan. The JPMorgan Chase debacle would have been prevented if the Volcker Rule were sufficiently strict, prohibiting banks from using commercial deposits to make bets except very specific offsetting bets (hedges) on narrow classes of trades.

But Jamie Dimon and JPMorgan have been lobbying like mad to loosen the Volcker Rule and widen that exception to include the very kind of reckless bets JPMorgan made. And they?re still at it, as evidenced by Dimon?s current claim that the rule that eventually emerges would allow those bets.

As a practical matter, the Volcker Rule is hopeless. It was intended to be Glass-Steagall lite ? a more nuanced version of the original Depression-era law that separated commercial from investment banking. But JPMorgan has proven that any nuance ? any exception ? will be stretched beyond recognition by the big banks.

So much money can be made when these bets turn out well that the big banks will stop at nothing to keep the spigot open.

There?s no alternative but to resurrect Glass-Steagall as a whole. Even then, the biggest banks are still too big to fail or to regulate. We also need to heed the recent advice of the Dallas branch of the Federal Reserve, and break them up.

At the same time, there?s no point to the ?carried interest? loophole that allows private-equity managers like Mitt Romney to treat their incomes as capital gains, taxed at only 15 percent, when they?ve risked no money of their own.

If private equity were good for America it wouldn?t need this or the other tax preference it depends on, elevating debt over equity. But the private equity industry has huge political clout, which is why these tax preferences remain.

Get it? Bain Capital and JPMorgan are parts of the same problem. The President should be leading the charge against both.
